Race Report
June 12, 2005 - Week 7
With a National Event in Shoreham Long Island, coupled
with oppressive temperatures in the high 80s with very
high humidity, the crowd at Foothills this week was
quite small. 130 riders divided into 36 motos and only
two mains would make this the smallest race since August
10th of 2003. With a good number of its regular volunteers
away at the National, a number of people really stepped
forward to pick up the slack. On behalf of the staff
at the Litchfield County BMX Group Inc., thanks so much
for making this day a fun one.
The two classes that had enough riders to force the
need for Main events were the 8 year old Rookie class
and the 16 – 29 Open Wheels class. In the 8 Rookie
action, nine riders battled to transfer onto to the
eight rider main. With the Fusco’s Used Auto Parts
sponsored Chris Pannullo wining a moto, Josh Velardi
and William Joyce also sharing moto wins, it was obvious
that the main was up for grabs. When the dust settled
it was former Rider Of The Week Keith Morrisey winning
the closely contested main. The 16 – 29 Open was
a little short on riders but not on excitement. Shane
Mcpherson crashed out in the first moto so it was basically
go through the motions and wait for the main as every
one else automatically transferred. When the gate dropped
in the main it was Brian Adamaitis exploding out of
the gate with a great start. All the way around the
track, Felix Pagan was forcing Brian to really push
it. By the time they reached the forth turn, Flash dove
to the inside and took the lead and held off Brian the
rest of the way for the win. Third place went to Jason
Soukup on the mountain bike.
In the rest of the Rookie classes Matt Velardi won
5 & under again this week after being named Rider
of the Week last week; Anthony Monterio won 6 Rookie;
Trevor Fox again a winner in 7 Rookie; Matt Mitchell
was perfect in 9 Rookie as was Dylan Jacquemin in 10
Rookie. The “Candy Man” Anthony Reilly,
riding for Schweiger Tile and Flooring, won the 11-12
Rookie combined class.; Chris Mann was the 13 Rookie
champ; ERA II’s Martin Brown was top gun in 14
Rookie; Winchester Modular Housing sponsored Jeramey
Bakunis put his bike in the winners circle in 15 Rookie
while Josh Brown did the same in 16 Rookie. Matt Lucas
was the winner in 17 rookie. Special thanks to Tim Bierce
for helping out 8 year old Rookie William Joyce earlier
in the day.
Novice action was also pretty intense with Jason Savoca
winning 6-8 Novice combined; Shawn Mcauley won 9 Novice;
the Weight Room sponsored Austin Vailencourt was the
dominant rider in 10 year old novice action. 12-13 Novice
combined went to Colby Brouillard; Aaron Testa, sponsored
by The Quiet Zone, won 15 Novice and Kevin Matthews
had a big win in 16 Expert-16 Novice combined by beating
an expert. Kevin is sponsored by Escape Plumbing and
Heating. Gary Velardi was the fastest this day in 35
& over Novice competition.
The Animal, Zach Andringa won the 10 year old expert
class; Anthony Del Vento was fastest in 13 Expert while
another Massachusetts rider, Andrew Christopher, won
the 14 Expert group. The Casa Mia Restaurant sponsored
Pete Balotti held off the rest of the 15 Experts while
Dan Buckner did the same in the 17,18-21 Expert division.
